FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • How do I sign up or renew my membership?

Go to the join/renew membership page which will lead you through a simple online process to join or renew membership.

  • I'm a new joiner. After I've paid, how long does it take to activate my membership?

To make sure the payment system has worked, your membership needs to be activated by the membership administrator. They will aim to do this within five working days. Once completed, you will be sent an email to confirm that your membership has indeed been activated. If you subsequently log in to the website you will now be able to see the Members Section menu.

  • I've just joined (or renewed) but can't see the Members Section menu on the website...

Wait for the membership renewal email sent by BFE staff. This will confirm that your membership is activated. If you've paid, it shouldn't take us too long to get back to you! You may now have to log out and log back in again on the website to trigger access to the members-only area. If you still encounter a problem, don't hesitate to contact membershipatbfe.org.uk.

  •  I'm a member already. Do I need to join the BFE JISCMail Public mailing list too?

You do not need to join the BFE JISCMail Public mailing list, but there are benefits. The JISCMail list (open to members and non-members) will give you access to any ethnomusicology related communications approved by the BFE moderator, including news of conferences, events, and job opportunities. You can subscribe/unsubscribe to the BFE JISCMail list here.

  • I've forgotten my username/password

Click on the 'Request new password' button (on the 'login/create account' page of the 'User Account' menu). You can enter either your username or your e-mail address and the website will email you a new password automatically. You can later change your password again yourself to something more secure and memorable in the 'My Account' settings.

  • I have logged back in, but do not have access to the Members' Section. I am a member in good standing, and have received my membership confirmation email. How can this be fixed?

If you are a member in good standing but do not have access to the members' area, please email membershipatbfe.org.uk. Our membership administrator will be able to rectify this situation.

  • I am joining/renewing in the middle of the year - am I missing out?

Memberships are based upon the calendar year, and run from 1st of January to 31st of December. Whatever point in the year you join, you are entitled to all benefits for that year. You will still receive all journal issues published that year (including those published before your join date), online access to the journal, access to the BFE Members' Section, Routledge book discounts, and so on. Furthermore, you will be eligible for any conference discounts/bursaries and relevant BFE prizes that occur between your join date and the end of the year.

  • I would like copies of the previous year's journal, but was not a member that year.

Members have online access to all issues of Ethnomusicology Forum and Popular Music and Society. If you would like physical copies of previous years of Ethnomusicology Forum, please contact membershipatbfe.org.uk. You will need to pay for membership of the year the journals were published. It is also dependent on if copies are available from the publisher (copies are usually kept for 1-2 years).

For hard copies of journals prior to 2016, please contact Taylor & Francis directly at TF.Societiesatinforma.com.

  • How does the BFE protect my card details?

The BFE neither sees nor stores any of your personal banking or card details. Whether paying by Debit or Credit Card, or using Paypal money-transfer itself, your data is all managed exclusively through robust Paypal financial security systems. The BFE can only check that payment has been received and from whom.

  • How do you store my contact details?

All information on how we store and interact with your data can be found in our GDPR and Data Protection policy - any questions can be sent to membershipatbfe.org.uk.

  • What is the refunds policy?

The BFE is not usually able to offer a refund for payments already made (payment processors can charge very high fees for this). If you have inadvertently paid too much or twice for membership, by direct bank transfer or otherwise, then the BFE treasurer or membership officer will be in touch to help arrange the best solution (which may depend on original mode of payment and location of sender). Event fees (and refund policies) will depend on the host institution, not the BFE, if they are running their own delegate payments system. If you have any queries do not hesitate to contact treasureratbfe.org.uk.
