Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Working Group
Mission Statement:
The EDI Working Group exists to support members of the BFE. We advise on matters pertaining to equality, diversity, and inclusion including but not limited to disability, ethnicity, class, gender expression and identity, sexual orientation, and caring responsibilities. We want to foster a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all. If you would like to get in touch, please email edibfe.org.uk.
Working Group Members:
Fiorella Montero-Diaz (they/them; she/her; he/him)
I am a Senior Lecturer in Ethnomusicology at Keele University. My research focuses on music hybridity, citizenship, race, class, and social conflict in contemporary Peru and Colombia. I am particularly interested in understanding the impact music has on people in conflict contexts (racial, ethnic, class, gender) noting which experiences, if any, contribute to breaking patterns of social segregation, discrimination, and racism.
I sit on several EDI panels and initiatives in the UK and Peru with the objective and hope of giving visibility to diverse identities. I want to empower other people with similar identities to mine to dream and aim high, to collaborate with allies, to co-produce with partners and to fight for a more inclusive field, country and world.
Working for the BFE is a privilege and I want to contribute to keep making it inclusive, friendly, rigorous and empowering for all identities and backgrounds.
Stina Homer (she/her)
I am an Associate Lecturer at the Open University, where I work with a very diverse student population and am passionate about inclusive teaching practices. My other interests include gender diversity in music research and my PhD was about issues of accessibility and equity in museums and musical instrument research. My work with the BFE means a lot to me and I hope as members you feel like you can come to me with any concerns or questions as we try to make this a fairer, more accessible and welcoming space.
Min Yen Ong (she/her)
I am an ethnomusicologist at the University of Oxford with regional interests in the music of East Asia and the Pacific Islands. I would like to make BFE a welcoming and safe space for all members. Please do feel free to be in touch with any concerns you may have.
Andrew Green (he/him)
I am an anthropologist of music based at King’s College London, whose research focuses on the musical and acoustic cultures of Mexico. I strongly believe in a diverse and inclusive music education, built on the principle of the equity of global musics; and in purposive music research which is responsive to increasing global challenges, especially in the Global South. On the EDI Working Group, I push for the BFE to be an inclusive, welcoming, and empowering space for members of all backgrounds.
