Dr Stephen Wilford
Dr Stephen Wilford is Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology, Popular Music and Sound Studies at the University of Cambridge, where he is part of the ERC-funded project ‘Past and Present Musical Encounters Across the Strait of Gibraltar’. His work focuses upon the musics of Algeria, spanning a range of traditions and styles, from the country’s andalusi associations to the Franco-Algerian hip hop scene. His AHRC-funded PhD was completed at City, University of London, and produced an ethnomusicological study of contemporary London’s Algerian music scene. Alongside his role with the BFE, Stephen is also a Fellow of Wolfson College Cambridge and a member of both the Royal Anthropological Institute’s Ethnomusicology-Ethnochoreology Committee and the Society for Ethnomusicology’s Global Online Chapter.
